Enter the size and the thickness, add the sides of your canvas if the resin should run over them, and you get the amount in fluid ounces, milliliters, and weight, split into resin and hardener. That way, you never mix too much or run out halfway through a pour.

This free tool runs in your browser and needs JavaScript. For several identical pieces, set the number of pieces.

Coat the edges. If the resin should flow over the sides, set “Coat the edges” to “Yes” and enter the edge height, which is the depth of your canvas frame.

Set the thickness. Type it in or tap a quick value (1/16, 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 inch). Fractions and decimals both work.

Choose the resin and mixing ratio. Pick coating, casting, or deep pour resin, then the ratio printed on your kit and whether it is measured by volume or by weight.

Read the result. The total is at the top, with the amounts of resin (A) and hardener (B) below it. Copy the result, print it or save it as a PDF, or copy a share link that brings back all your values.

How Much Resin Do I Need for a Painting?

The amount of resin is a volume: area times thickness. A 12 x 12 inch canvas with a 1/8 inch coat holds 12 x 12 x 0.125 = 18 cubic inches, which is about 10 fl oz. If the resin also runs over the sides of a 3/4 inch deep canvas, the calculator adds the perimeter (48 inches) times the edge height times the thickness, here 2.49 fl oz. That makes 12.5 fl oz in total.

Then it adds your extra for waste. With the default 10%, the calculator shows 13.7 fl oz, or about 406 ml, of mixed resin. At a 1:1 ratio by volume, you mix 6.86 fl oz of resin and 6.86 fl oz of hardener.

How Thick Should Resin Be on a Painting?

Many art resins level out on their own to a coat of about 1/8 inch. A thinner pour can pull away from the edges, so 1/8 inch is a good starting value for a glossy top coat. For resin art with several layers, such as geodes or beach art, plan each layer on its own. Our list of resin art supplies explains which resin types and tools you need.

Do I Need to Include the Edges?

Yes, if you want the resin to cover the sides. On small paintings, the edges are a big share of the total: on our 12 x 12 inch canvas, they add about 20%. Less resin stays on the sides than on top, so this extra also covers the drips. Tape the underside of the canvas with painter’s tape first, and you can simply peel the drips off later.

Resin Calculator Examples for Resin Art

Here are four examples worked out with the calculator and its default values (10% extra, 1.1 g/ml, 1:1 by volume).

Resin Coasters and Petri Dishes

For castings, choose “Mold”, then “Cylinder” for round molds or “Box” for square ones, and enter the inside size and the fill height. Four round coasters with a 4 inch diameter and a 1/4 inch fill need 1.74 fl oz each, or 6.96 fl oz together. With the extra, the calculator shows 7.66 fl oz, or about 227 ml. Our tutorials for resin coasters and colorful resin petri dishes with alcohol ink show you the process.

Always measure a mold on the inside. If you don’t know the size, fill the mold with water once and pour it into a measuring cup. Let it dry completely before you pour. You can also make your own molds with our guide on how to make silicone molds for resin.

Resin Geodes

A geode has no straight edge. Estimate the area the resin should cover and enter it under “Any area” in square inches or square feet. If the geode covers about 1.5 square feet of a wood panel and the layer should be 1/4 inch thick, the calculator shows 32.9 fl oz, or about 2.36 lb. Geodes are often poured in several rings and layers. Then work out and mix each layer on its own. Our step-by-step guides for resin geode art and the resin geode egg show how to build it up.

Ocean Art on a Round Panel

For a round ocean piece with a 16 inch diameter, use the “Circle” tab. With a 1/8 inch coat and 3/4 inch edges, that is 13.9 fl oz for the surface and 2.61 fl oz for the edges, or 18.2 fl oz with the extra. If you pour waves, sand, and deep water in several steps, split the total by the area each color covers. Our beach art tutorial has ideas for sand and textures.

Resin Over an Acrylic Pour Painting

A resin coat makes a pour painting glossy. The math is the same as for a resin painting: rectangle, canvas size, a 1/8 inch coat, and the edges if you like. The acrylic pour must be fully dry first, which can take several days depending on the paint layer. When you can seal and which other options you have is covered in our guide to drying and sealing your acrylic pourings. For the paint itself, use our acrylic pouring calculator.

Mixing Ratio, Density, and Pigment

Epoxy resin and hardener are mixed in a fixed ratio such as 1:1, 2:1, or 100:45, either by volume or by weight. The two are not the same, because resin and hardener usually differ in density. The calculator splits the amount in the unit that counts for your product and shows the other unit as an estimate. The list offers 1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 100:45, 100:40, and 100:30, and you can type any other ratio into the two fields. Our guide on mixing epoxy resin shows how to stir thoroughly without whipping in air.

The density starts at 1.1 g/ml. You can find the exact value for your resin on the technical data sheet and enter it. It only changes the weight, so it matters most when you measure with a scale.

Pigment and Color

Enter a pigment share as a percentage of the resin weight, and the calculator shows how much pigment you need. For the 12 x 12 inch canvas without edges (12.6 oz of resin), 2% is 0.25 oz. How much color a resin can take depends on the product, so stay below the maximum the maker gives. Our guide on how to color resin explains which colorants work and how to add them.

Pouring in Layers

Every resin has a maximum thickness per pour. If a coating resin is poured too thick, it can get too hot while it cures and crack or turn yellow. The calculator compares your thickness with the “Max. per layer” field. It starts at 1/4 inch for coating resin, 1 inch for casting resin, and 2 inches for deep pour resin. Enter the value from your data sheet if you have it.

If your thickness is above the limit, the calculator splits the pour into equal layers and shows the amount per layer. A 1.5 square foot geode that is 1/2 inch thick becomes two layers of 1/4 inch with coating resin. With the default 24 hours between layers, there are about 24 hours from the first to the last pour. Enter the recoat time from your data sheet.

Cost and Packages

Enter your price per gallon, liter, pound, or kilogram and the currency ($, €, £, or CHF). The calculator shows the resin cost for your project and, with a package size, how many kits you need to buy, always rounded up. At $100 per gallon, the 12 x 12 inch canvas with edges costs $10.71 in resin.

Tips for Your Resin Project

Measure carefully. Thickness has a direct effect: a 1/4 inch coat needs twice as much resin as a 1/8 inch coat.

Work on a level surface. Keep the painting level and support large canvases from below, so the resin doesn’t pool in the middle.

Mix layer by layer. Only mix as much as you can pour within the working time. Large batches in a cup heat up faster.

Watch the temperature. Most resins are easiest to work with at a room temperature of about 70 to 77°F. Check the data sheet for the exact range.

Protect yourself. Gloves and a well-ventilated room belong to every pour. The basics are in our resin epoxy art basics.

If you work with wood, for example slices or frames with resin, see our guides to epoxy resin for wood and the epoxy resin river table. The “River table” tab in the calculator subtracts the share taken up by the wood.

Privacy and Honest Limits

The resin calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded or stored, and you don’t need an account. The share link stores your values after the # sign in the address, a part that browsers don’t send to the server.

All results are estimates for planning and buying. Textures, embedded shells, or dried flowers are not included, and an absorbent surface soaks up some resin, so add a little more extra in those cases. The data sheet of your resin always comes first: mixing ratio, maximum thickness, temperature, and waiting times.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Much Resin Do I Need for a 12 x 12 Canvas?

With a 1/8 inch coat, the surface needs about 10 fl oz. Coating the 3/4 inch edges adds 2.49 fl oz, and with 10% extra the total is 13.7 fl oz, or about 406 ml of mixed resin.

How Much Epoxy Do I Need per Square Foot?

One square foot at 1/8 inch holds 18 cubic inches, which is about 10 fl oz. A gallon covers about 12.8 square feet at that thickness, before the extra for waste.

How Much Resin Do I Need for a Coaster?

A round coaster with a 4 inch diameter and a 1/4 inch fill needs about 1.74 fl oz. Four coasters need 6.96 fl oz, or 7.66 fl oz with 10% extra. Use “Mold”, “Cylinder”, and the number of pieces in the calculator.

How Do I Calculate Resin for a Circle?

The area of a circle is the diameter times the diameter times 3.14, divided by 4. A 16 inch round painting has about 201 square inches and needs about 13.9 fl oz at 1/8 inch. The “Circle” tab does the math and can add the edges.

Can I Pour Resin Over an Acrylic Pour Painting?

Yes, once the paint is fully dry. A coat of about 1/8 inch gives a glossy, even finish. Work out the amount like a resin painting, including the edges if the resin should cover them.

Is the Mixing Ratio by Volume or by Weight?

That depends on the product, so check the label or the data sheet. The two are not the same, because resin and hardener usually differ in density. You set this under “Measure” in the calculator.

Is This Resin Calculator Free?

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and works in US or metric units, with decimals or fractions, and in four currencies.

Our free resin calculator tells you how much epoxy resin you need for your resin art: a resin painting on canvas, a resin geode, coasters and petri dishes from a silicone mold, a round ocean art piece, or a glossy top coat on an acrylic pour painting.
